“It urges readers to radically rethink what it means to be an architect in an era of climate crisis, and what the role of the architect is or can be.”
We are very excited to soon welcome the inaugural edition of a new RIBA publication which went to print this month. ‘Design Studio Vol. 1: Everything Needs to Change’ is co-edited by Sofie Pelsmakers (university tutor and mentor figure to Studio Bark’s founders) and Studio Bark / U-Build Director Nick Newman.
In addition to Nick’s editorial role, Studio Barkers have also contributed content. “Movement Building: Activism in an Age of Crisis” is a piece by Tom Bennett which explores different ways that architects can interface with broader movements for social and environmental justice. The article was researched through a series of conversations with change makers who have deviated from typical professional routes to carve out roles as ‘architectural activists’. Meanwhile “Transforming Education in a Climate Emergency” was penned collaboratively by ACAN’s (Architects Climate Action Network) Education Group, coordinated by Sarah Broadstock. This article examines how architectural training needs to change to face up to the massive challenges posed by the climate crisis.
Congratulations to Sofie, Nick and everyone who contributed to bringing this important and timely publication into the world. We are very much looking forward to getting our hands on a copy!
