This academic year Studio Bark are running an architecture unit for UEL postgraduate students. We’ve spent the last couple of days in the UEL school of architecture studios, pitching our proposal and interviewing prospective students for a place in Unit 0: ‘Meanwhile in Newham… ‘
The unit will explore the impact that economy is having on environment; architecture in the context of increasing climate uncertainty; and the growing consensus that we need to repurpose the buildings that we already have.
Students will investigate the overlap of social and environmental issues in order to formulate adaptive architectural proposals, focusing on a challenging disused depot site in East Ham, Newham. Drawing upon concepts such as the circular economy, commons ownership and meanwhile typologies, we seek to develop architectural strategies that can benefit both the environment and local communities.
We’re looking forward to getting stuck in to the brief, and getting to know the students over the coming weeks and months!
