At Studio Bark we've completed a range of off-grid (and somewhat off-grid) homes, to a complete range of budgets. These homes are able to function independently in terms of energy, water and waste, for the majority, if not the whole, of the year.
Each project has been a unique learning opportunity in the trade-offs and benefits of off-grid homes, from the large set-up costs, to the financial and emotional empowerment that comes with living off-grid.
So, you like the idea of off-grid living. But where to start?
Benefits of Off-Grid Homes

Challenges of Off-Grid Homes
Initial Investment:
Setting up an off-grid house in the UK can involve substantial upfront costs. For instance, installing renewable energy systems, establishing water collection infrastructure, and implementing efficient waste management systems.
Financial planning and access to appropriate funding sources may be necessary to overcome this challenge.
Energy Management:
Careful planning is needed to manage energy and ensure a consistent power supply, due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources in the UK such as solar and wind.
Efficient storage systems, backup solutions, and energy-efficient practices are crucial to overcoming potential energy shortages.
Seasonal Availability:
Solar PV panels are likely to be a principal energy source for an off-grid home in the UK, and so you can expect large seasonal variations. During winter much less energy will be available, while demand will generally be greater, and vice-versa in summer.
While battery and storage technologies have developed a lot over recent years, these are generally not yet up to the task of managing long-range seasonal fluctuations and the mismatch between supply and demand.
Technical Expertise:
There's a lot of technical knowledge and skill to be acquired to maintain and troubleshoot your off-grid home.
As a homeowner you will need to be prepared either to learn a lot about how your unique home functions, or rely on professional assistance for the installation, maintenance, and repair of your off-grid systems.
Water Availability:
In certain regions of the UK, access to freshwater sources are limited. Dependence on rainwater harvesting and water filtration systems raises concerns about water availability and quality. Water conservation practices and alternative water sources may need to be explored.
Our Thoughts
Be prepared...
Living fully off-grid is not for everyone. You may need to adopt a more conscious and frugal lifestyle – particularly in the winter months when the seasonal fluctuations are at their greatest. Resource consumption and waste generation must be carefully monitored and managed.
For some, this can provide a more conscious emotional connection to the seasons and the resources we use from nature, and that can give a great sense of satisfaction. However while off-grid living is enticing to many, it is also to be considered seriously as the challenges can mean it is often not suitable.
... And consider hybrid
Through our experience of designing off-grid homes at various scales and complexities, we've learnt that every project must be specific to it's environment and the needs of the homeowner.
We have found that most sites benefit from some form of grid connection, which can help to reduce capital costs and provide a more sustainable and reliable backup system than many of the alternatives, such as the often used diesel generators.
